For Live Scan services

Q. What is Live Scan Fingerprinting?

A. Live Scan is an inkless fingerprinting process where fingerprints are electronically transmitted to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) for background screening. The Califoania DOJ may also forward Live Scan fingerprints to the FBI if required.

Q. Who needs Live Scan Fingerprinting?

A. All institutions and professions with applicants for employment. licensing or certification: Security Guards, Teachers, Schools, Realtors, Notaries, CPA's, Lottery Retailers, Stock Brokers, Contractors, Nurses/Doctors/Hospitals, Attorneys, Caregivers for children and elderly, Gaming, Insurance, Pilots, Pharmacists, Volunteers, Dental Assistants, Others.

Q. Where can I find the ‘Request for Live Scan Service’ Form?

A. The requesting agency (agency that is requesting the background check) will provide the live scan forms.

Q. How does the Live Scan Fingerprinting process work?

A. A Trained and Certified Technician will scan your fingerprints using a Live Scan machine. The electronic fingerprinting session takes about ten minutes and your prints are sent via electronic transmission to the appropriate requesting agency who receives the results within 3 to 5 business days.

Q. Can my request be expedited for an additional charge?

A. No. Unfortunately, the DOJ does not offer an expedited process.

Q. Do I need to do a live scan again if I have already done it once or more before?

A. Yes. The DOJ does not share your information with other agencies. It is against the law for different agencies to share confidential fingerprint results with each other. An applicant’s Live Scan form acts as a release for a response to be sent to the specified requesting agency. This means that you must submit a new application each time a Live Scan is requested of you; therefore you must go through the Live Scan process again. Previous Live Scan information CANNOT be utilized.

Q. How do I check my Live Scan Fingerprinting results?

A. Once the submission is received and processed, the DOJ will respond to the applicant agency either electronically or via U.S. mail. Most of the time results are returned to the applicant agency within three days. If a requesting agency does not have results within seven days and digital Live Scan fingerprints were submitted, you can use the automated telephone system to check on your submission. You will need the following information: (1) your date of birth; and (2) the 10-digit Automated Transaction Identifier (ATI) number that appears at the bottom of the Department of Justice form requesting Live Scan fingerprint background checks. The ATI number always appears in the following sequence: 1 LETTER; 3 NUMBERS; 3 LETTERS and 3 NUMBERS.

Q. What happens if my Live Scan fingerprints are rejected?

A. Fingerprints can be rejected for several reasons. The most common are characteristics with the Applicant's fingerprints that makes them difficult to capture. This would include wear of the surface skin, cuts, cracks, scars, calluses and other skin conditions. If an Applicant's fingerprints are rejected on this basis, the originating Live Scan agency should re-take the Applicant's fingerprints at no additional cost. Bring your letter of rejection from the agency that sent it. This letter contains your original ATI (Applicant Transmission Identifier) number which is necessary for re-submission.
